A $5 donation at
the gate defrays the cost of the event. Antiques Fair gate captains are
invited to attend as guests of Park West. Non-PWCA members are welcome to
join the Association at the gate, and then attend the party for no additional
charge. There is no charge for children under 10. |
PRESIDENT’S PAGE
This is my last message to the Park West Community as the president of the
Association. It has been a good year, and I've enjoyed working with the
Board, Alderman Daley and her staff, and, of course, the community as a
whole. The support that everyone has offered has been very meaningful to
me. This is a wonderful place to live and volunteer. However, my husband
David and I have decided that we are going to take a new direction and have
bought a house in Maine, and while we are not giving up on Chicago, we are
giving up on owning two houses and have also bought a loft in Printer's Row.
So with happy anticipation but not a small amount of regret, we have moved
from a wonderful house on a wonderful street in a wonderful neighborhood
and are starting a new adventure.
Park West will be electing a new president and a new Board on July 24th,
7:00pm at Bigler Auditorium, Children's Hospital. Everyone is invited to
come, member or not. . .however, only members may vote. So, why not join
the organization, be an active part of your community and have a say in what
goes on in your neighborhood? The topics being discussed at the meeting
will include the development of the Columbus Hospital site, the impending
construction at the Bus Barn site and the status of the Clark Street
Streetscape. The discussions will be led by representatives from the Park
West Board and the Alderman's office. If there is anything else you want to
know or say, please bring your questions or comments to the meeting.
The Board and neighborhood will also be saying goodbye to three very active
and not easily replaced members. Bill Griffiths has served on the Board as
vice-president, treasurer, a member of the Planning Committee and as
sub-committee Chairman for the Bus Barn. His willingness to do whatever
needs doing and to do it well will be missed. It isn't often that
organizations have someone with his talents and sense of responsibility.
Bill always does it all with grace and good humor.
Jude Tanter, the chairman of the Neighborhood Beautification Committee and
the leading force in pushing for the Clark Street Streetscape. . .and, yes,
it is going to happen. Jude has taken on many jobs that no one else wanted
to do and done them enthusiastically and well.
Joan Leber has been Membership Chairman. She computerized the system and
turned an otherwise cumbersome area of responsibility into a manageable job.
She has also served as the Dealer Co-Chairman of the Antiques Fair along
with Gayle Morse, another mammoth undertaking. Jobs well done.
It is always difficult in any organization when members leave because we
tend to think that they ARE their JOBS. If Bill isn't there, then who? No
Jude? Then who? No Joan? Then who? However, we all know that none of us
is indispensable and that someone just as hard-working, cheerful and
innovative will take over. So, now I'm asking those of you who have yet to
serve on the Board or maybe are not even members of Park West to get
involved. Be the next Bill, Jude or Joan. What you get back in terms of
friendships, satisfaction and fun will more than compensate for any time
spent.
Park West has had an exciting new business come to Clark Street, and I would
like to take the opportunity to welcome Blumgarten & Co., an innovative
florist located between Rudi Fazuli's and Mickey's on Clark Street. Lance
Larsen, store manager, brings a unique artistic approach to floral
arrangements whether for a special occasion or just because. In addition to
floral design, the third floor of the building houses a fine art gallery
called "Gallery B" frequently featuring works by the stores floral designers
among others. An upcoming show opens on the 4th of August titled
appropriately enough "POD."
Again, thank you to all of the members of the Park West Community
Association for the opportunity to work with you. See you around. . .
-Polly Goldman
